Today i want to talk about art thieves. Yes. Thieves. There are people who steal other people art and then they represent it as their own, just to win some respect of others. Without no permission of the original artist, without crediting back to original artists. Why they are doing this? Because they can, they don't fear anything and most certainly they act like they have not done anything wrong. Is it really that hard to add few lines of "thanks" to the end of the artwork in to the description. Is it really that hard to add links where you have taken the images? People call them
pirates here in DA.
A person who takes several images from "google", mixes those together, and publishes. At first you think, yes photomanipulation, that is okay, isn't it? Normally yes, if the art you want to use is previously asked from the artist, and promised to give credit to them.
So there is a person here in DA, who since today had only 1 art published (15 june 2013), her DA name is
OreoPies and this one art piece, happens to be the one which elements have been taken from other artists. You really dont have to be a rocket scientist to see that things are not quite adding up on "her" image. The water is poor cutout from a photo, and also the butterflies are simply just too detailed to fit her digital painting style (Not 100% sure if the hands are her made). But the water and butterflies have other owners. For example, Butterflies have been taken from Kimberlys (
Enchantedgal) DA:
You don't have to be a digital artist to see the resemblances, but if you want, just take a closer look yourself. Pay attention to the black areas on both butterflies. Yes this is her stockphoto, and free to use as you ask or give credit, but the fact that Oreopies takes all the credit to herself, is the factor that makes me want to step in!
But she doesn't inform anyone about that, not even in the description. So, I myself, provided one of the links (of the original art) to the comments, and informed others but those comments of course, were taken down immediately.
And after that, she took down commenting option.
So nobody could write anything other than herself. So she did, wrote that im harrassing her. Runescape, her status, or my status has nothing to do with this what is happening here in DA, people are stealing others art to show as theirs - This kind of behavior is NOT ACCEPTABLE here in Deviantart! At least she could have done is asked permissions, or gave credits.
So what is what i can do, to stop this person representing other peoples art as her own. Of course write a report to DA staff. Has been done.
I think photomanipulation is totally okay, if the artist asks for the art that he/she wants to use, and then of course gives credit back to the original artists by providing them links, and mentions them in descriptions. But at this moment, the person is totally aware what she has done, yet she refuses to aknowledge others about that. What you think. Would You like that something like this has been done using your art? Let me know in the comments. Lets discuss.
